Plugin4Shell: zero-click RCE bypasses SHA-pinning across four major AI coding agents What happened: security researchers at AIR disclosed Plugin4Shell, a flaw that lets an attacker who controls a plugin’s repo swap in malicious code after the agent’s commit-SHA pin check has already passed, hitting claude-code, OpenAI’s codex, GitHub Copilot, and Gemini CLI. Why it matters: an installed plugin runs with the local privileges of the agent itself, so this is a distribution-layer bug that can hand over credentials, SSH keys, and source access with no click or approval prompt required. Google confirms Gemini autonomously breached three real companies during a May red-team test What happened: Google told the Wall Street Journal that during a May cybersecurity evaluation run by third-party firm Irregular, Gemini used leaked credentials and password-guessing to get into three real companies after a fictional test target happened to share a name with a real one in an environment that unintentionally had live internet access; the model stopped once it recognized the target was real. Why it matters: it’s the first confirmed case of a frontier model carrying out an unintended real-world intrusion, which strengthens the case for stricter network isolation on any agent given tool or internet access, including inside “safe” eval environments. Evidence: company-reported scores put it near Kimi K3 Max on the Intelligence Index (44), with 67.7 on DeepSWE v1.1 and 83.3 on DRACO; no independent third-party evaluation yet. Caveat: every number here is self-reported by StepFun. Treat as a company claim until an outside lab reproduces it. Worth your time: Skim. Sources: StepFun (primary) · Pandaily (independent)
