The signal

  1. Federal judge rules Pentagon’s “supply chain risk” label on Anthropic was illegal retaliation What happened: US District Judge Rita Lin issued a written order Thursday night finding that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s designation of Anthropic as a national security risk was unlawful retaliation under the First Amendment and “arbitrary and capricious,” writing that “the empty invocation of national security is not a blank check to punish and retaliate against government critics.” The dispute traces back to February, when Anthropic, under darioamodei, refused an open-ended Pentagon contract it said would have overridden its bans on lethal autonomous weapons and domestic mass surveillance. Why it matters: it’s the first court check on the administration’s use of a national-security label against a lab that pushes back on how the government wants to use its models, and it puts pressure on a separate, narrower Anthropic case still pending in the DC Circuit. The government is expected to appeal, so the supply-chain-risk label technically stays in place for now. Confidence: Confirmed Sources: NPR (independent) · CNBC (independent) · CNN (independent)
