TL;DR Anthropic flew engineers to Washington on June 15 to negotiate lifting the Fable 5 export ban and came away empty-handed. Claude Code 2.1.178 shipped the same day with new Tool(param:value) permission rules.

Models & research

  • model-releases Anthropic sent senior engineers to DC on June 15 to try to resolve the Trump administration’s export-control ban on Fable 5 and Mythos 5; CNBC and TechTimes report no deal, both sides still split on risk. The directive, invoked June 12 after a reported jailbreak, has no expiration date and bars all foreign nationals from access. TechTimes · CNBC

  • model-releases Fable 5 is free inside Claude Pro/Max/Team/Enterprise plans through June 22, then moves to usage credits at $10/M input and $50/M output (2x Opus 4.8 rates); Anthropic cites capacity as the reason for the transition. Developers Digest

Tools & dev

  • claude-code v2.1.178 shipped June 15: new Tool(param:value) syntax in permission rules lets you match on tool input parameters with wildcard support (e.g. Agent(model:opus) blocks Opus subagents); nested .claude/ directories now resolve closest-wins for agents, workflows, and output-styles. Also improved auto-mode subagent classification before launch, /doctor layout overhaul, and fixes for JetBrains terminal flicker and Chrome connection drops. Claude Code changelog

People

  • simonw broke the story June 11 on Anthropic walking back a covert policy buried in Fable 5’s 319-page system card that would silently degrade responses for frontier LLM researchers (pretraining pipelines, ML accelerator work) without notifying them. Anthropic apologized, saying such requests now visibly fall back to Opus 4.8 the same way cyber and bio requests do. simonwillison.net · X
